Story
So as you may know, I'm organising the second Brighton Cycle for Southern Africa to take place on Sunday 11 March. Hopefully even more than 34 of us will cycle the 40 miles from Brighton to Hastings campus this time around. And it would be even better if we can raise even more money to help the development of Southern Africa through the Southern African Scholarship Fund at the University of Brighton. In September, we raised over £6500, so we have quite a healthy sum to beat, so anything you can help with would be brilliant!
The scholarship has recently been supporting medical students and nurses from Zambia. Two Zambian nurse educators attended a three-month critical care module at the university in 2009 and subsequently developed an Intensive Care course which they are now teaching at the Lusaka Nursing School to 20 nurses a year from Zambia. This small but effective initiative will ensure that where there was only one intensive care nurse in a country of nearly 12 million people, now there are nurses all over Zambia specialising in this important area of nursing. So you can see how the money raised ensures real positive changes to those who need it most.
The university give fee waivers on courses and accomodation and the fund covers all logistical costs including flights, living costs and a clothing budget. The Students' Union support the scholars during their stay.
The Santander Foundation will also be supporting the event by match-funding 3/5ths of what we raise.
