Mongol Rally 2010 · 24 July 2010 ·
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page,
The "Bristol Sand Club" is a team of 6 students who have a 1955 Bedford Green Goddess Fire Engine which we have adopted as our steed for a mammoth trip:
We have created this page in the hope that you would be interested in a project that We are undertaking in July; the Charity Mongol Rally, which means driving over 10,000 miles from London to Ulaanbaatar in Mongolia over tough terrain and hazardous conditions to raise money for the Cristina Noble's Children’s foundation who do a lot of important work with children in the country. We are also seeking sponsors to donate money to the pretty tough cause of getting our vehicle all the way to Mongolia in one piece so that it can be donated directly to their fire service, where it will hopefully save many lives. Additional money we raise above our target will go to Help for Heroes, and we already have an amount of money pledged for this aspect of our cause.
With our own funds we have purchased a Green Goddess, which is a beautiful old machine that has only done 4000 miles so far. It was built in 1955 and is complete with all the necessary fire fighting equipment. These ex-British Government fire engines were only decommissioned in 2005, and are currently in use all over Africa saving lives on a daily basis, something we hope ours will do in Mongolia. The organisers of the Mongol Rally arrange for all Emergency vehicles taken on the rally to be donated to their respective emergency services. This is the reason we chose a Green Goddess over a smaller car, as it adds another dimension to the charitable potential of the rally. The 4x4 ability of the Bedford Green Goddess makes it an appropriate choice for fire fighting in rural Mongolia. A more modern fire appliance would be unsuited to the conditions in Mongolia, as there is a distinct lack of roads in most areas, and the complexity of a more modern fire engine would shorten its useful life out there.
There are many aspects to this trip, such as the expense of preparing the vehicle for its journey, organising the numerable visas, planning our route but most importantly fundraising. We will each need to raise a minimum of £3000 to fund the trip as well as raise as much as possible for the cause in Mongolia, and our chosen British charity of Help for Heroes.
We feel we have much to offer our sponsors, as there is much publicity surrounding the event, including a lap of Goodwood and a high profile launch event; the sides of the vehicle are very large and it is my intent to have these covered in the logos of our sponsors in order to further our cause.
