Story
KOSTAJASA is tackling deforestation in Indonesia by focusing on protecting the highly desired mahogany tree and creating jobs in impoverished rural communities.
Through this project, cooperative members receive higher prices and a consistent market for their wood. This allows them to invest in planting more trees, in practicing better forest management and in expanding the area of forest they manage. Central to this work is KOSTAJASA's pursuit of ‘green certification' through the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC).
KOSTAJASA needs funding to cover training costs in sustainable forestry, for the start-up costs of achieving FSC-certification, and for developing a business cooperative to successfully trade their certified products.
