Story

17/08/13

Hi and thanks for looking. Well so far I have completed the Hell on the Humber 12hr endurance run. I achieved 31st position and ran 52 miles in 11hrs 4mins. This was the toughest thing I've ever done........so far!

31/08/13   Barnsley FC

Today was the first run to an away game. Oakwell, Barnsley F.C. 16.4 miles in 2hrs 40mins. My knees started hurting just a couple of miles in. I presume that it stems from running across a concrete bridge for 11 hours 2 weeks prior. I must admit that it wasn't my most enjoyable run but I managed to keep my speed at under 10 minute miles. The result of the game didn't help my mood either, or being crammed on a train full of Town fans for an hour when all I wanted to do was sit down. Still it's one down, nine to go. Bring on Ewood Park, Blackburn Rovers next.

21/09/13 Blackburn Rovers

Today my run took me on a painful journey of hills hills and more hills. I even ran down one only to have to run back up it because I had gone the wrong way. Oops. I managed it in 9 hrs 15 mins, 41 and a half miles in total. When you have just run 30 miles the thought of another unnecessary hill is torture. The run started well as I've run up and through Marsden before. It's 10 miles to the top of standedge. Every time I thought it would flatten out I seemed to hit another hill. I stopped at a nice little shop at about 8:30am and topped up with some lucozade sport and a couple of pieces of flapjack. Some guy next to me was buying a bottle of cider, no matter what, I'd rather be running than drinking. My next stop I made was in Edenfield where I stopped at a little sandwich shop where I picked up a much needed bacon and egg buttie, coffee, mars bar and can of coke. Feeling a bit better after a bit of banter with the girls in the shop I carried on my journey. The next two hours were the worst ever. Long climbs all the way. That road seemed never ending. Not until I could see the built up  metropolis of Blackburn did my mood start to improve. Then I started to see signs for Ewood park and I knew I was nearly there. I arrived with somewhat great relief. I had a nice police officer take a picture of me in front of the stadium. Gary from Blackburn Rovers turned up to let me in the B.R.I.C for a shower. The game wasn't great but we got a point out of it. On to the next one then. Leicester City........85 miles.  Aaarrgggghhhh!!!!!. :-D

19&20/10/13 Leicester City

Up and off again bang on 4am. The weather was fine but unpredictable at this hour, so started off quite wrapped up but soon warmed up and had to get some layers off. First thirty miles went without any real problems, just a few sections of road with no footpath made for a bit of a stop/start strategy for avoiding traffic. After an uneventful an relatively easy thirty I stopped at a little old style coffee house, where I had a much needed poached eggs and beans on toast, and a big mug of coffee. The owners were great and wished me well with a donation to the charity. The next few miles I was flying, then the pain started. My body was starting to tell me it had had enough by now, but I still had at least 20 miles to go. At 50 miles I came to a crossroads with a nice little bench where I decided to have a 5 mins rest. The bench was already occupied by an old chap who couldn't believe how far I'd come, in a way neither could I. He handed me a quid and said good luck. Every pound counts, and I set off again. By now I was running a bit then walking a bit. I was finding it harder and harder to keep any real pace up and the night was starting to draw in. It was getting colder too. By the time I reached the Hotel (20:30) I had covered around 62 miles(garmin ran out of battery quite a bit earlier). My legs were pretty much seized and my feet were throbbing. Bath & sleep. In the morning I felt a little better and went down for brekkie. Set off on the last 25 miles at 07:00. The first 15 miles I was flying, then I just seemed to lose all energy and motivation as I knew I was cutting it fine for getting let in to the ground for a shower. Near the Leicester city centre I grabbed a couple of cans of coke and a snickers and got to the stadium at 13:30, an hour later than scheduled. 87 miles in total. It was all rush rush, but I felt So much better after that shower. Another one down, 7 more to go. This was the hardest yet, yet. Sheffield Wednesday next, thank goodness. :-)

23/11/13 Sheffield Wednesday

Set off at 7:00 am as todays game is an early kick off. The run is a distance of around 21 miles. Nice and easy. I decided to run to Penistone and join the trans pennine trail there. It was a rather uneventful journey with no problems. I got to the ground in good time for kick off. Another one done.

03/12/13  Bolton Wanderers

37 miles today and it's a night time kick-off. So I set off at 9:30, slightly earlier than planned. The run starts on familiar ground with me taking the route up and through Marsden again and over Stannedge. Making my way into Delph, where I stopped to have a quick brew in a little cafe. Then on through Shaw and up to Heywood. Straight through Bury and on to Bolton. The Reebok Stadium is way on the other side of Bolton, so I had to negotiate my way around Bolton in the dark, tired and hungry. I got there for around 6:30 and went and picked up my FREE ticket from Huddersfield Town ( Big thanks to Robyn Deegan!) at the ticket office and made my way up to Coast to Coast where I got changed in the loos and grabbed a well needed pint of lager. Today was tough but by far not the hardest I've done. Let's see what the next one brings.
