Story

Thank you for taking the time to visit my Big Jump 2010 JustGiving page.  Having had my jump postponed because of cloud cover I have a second chance to be excited and terrified at the thought of jumping into 'nothingness'  but these things must be done to raise funds for a good cause!  The seven team members who got to jump did so well and had such fun that I really can't wait for my turn.  For once I must show patience which most people know isn't my redeeming feature! On the positive side it has given me more time to obtain sponsorship so I have increased my target.

The Gift of Sight Appeal raises funds to support research into eye disease (see www.giftofsight.org.uk).  In the course of my employment as Community Fundraiser for the Appeal I meet many generous and lovely people who are either visually impaired or just hugely supportive and many of whom have friends or family with eye problems. I have paid for the cost of my jump so all sponsorship supports Gift of Sight.

Professor Andrew Lotery leads the team undertaking world class research into Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, childhood blindness and inherited eye disease.  He was recently awarded a prestigious award, the Nettleship Medal, by the Royal College of Ophthalmology for the best research paper produced in the last four years.  This related to the identification of a new genetic risk factor for AMD and was the subject of a paper published by the prestigious medical journal, The Lancet
