The Cause:
I'm fundraising to support Refugee and Asylum Seeking Academics and Students, which the University of Sheffield has chosen as its charitable cause for 2016.
All donations will be used to support refugee academics and students at the University of Sheffield to demonstrate our solidarity with refugees and to show that refugees are welcome at the University and in our city.
Funds raised will be used in the following ways:
• Supporting at-risk academics: The University of Sheffield has strong links with a number of programmes to support at-risk academics, including the Institute of International Education's Scholar Rescue Fund and the Council for At-Risk Academics (CARA) - a charity which helps academics in immediate danger, those forced into exile. Through these partnerships, the University can host academics, giving them a place of safety and the financial and practical help to continue their careers until they can return home.
• Students seeking refuge or asylum: The University of Sheffield offers fully funded undergraduate and postgraduate scholarships for refugees including those seeking asylum in the UK. Throughout 2016 the University will be raising funds to increase this support.
The Challenge:
To support this very worthy cause, I'll be heading up to the Highlands of Scotland at the end of May, along with my friend Rhian, to kayak the Great Glen Canoe Trail - a 60 mile journey across Scotland from the west coast near Fort William to the east coast at Inverness, taking in the open waters of Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. We're hoping to complete the self-supported journey in 3-4 days from 31st May to 2nd/3rd June.

The Big Walk:
This is all part of a much bigger challenge organised by the University of Sheffield: The Big Walk. In June two teams of 10 staff will each be walking over 120 miles to Sheffield on the Trans Pennine Trail, one team from the west coast in Southport and the other from the east coast in Hornsea. On Day 5, the two teams will meet in Tankersley where they'll be joined by a team of staff, students, alumni and friends to walk the 18 miles back to campus, all in aid of refugee academics and students.
