My story

THE GREAT GLEN ROW

Hello, from 3 to 10 September this year, an aging group of ex rugby players from Teddington RFC are undertaking the GREAT GLEN ROW.  We shall be rowing nearly 100 miles along the Great Glen from Fort William to Inverness, via the Caledonian Canal, Loch Lochy and Loch Ness. We are undertaking this challenge to draw attention to and raise sponsorship, to reach our target of £5,000 for the charity - Prostate Action, www.prostateaction.org.uk . One of our crew was diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago.  Fortunately he has made a full recovery.  Quite simply, this episode has motivated us to do our bit to help this great cause.

The facts:

·         Prostate cancer accounts for one quarter of all cancers diagnosed in men

·         37,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in the UK each year.

·         Prostate cancer is the second most common cause of cancer death in UK men.

·         In 2009, prostate cancer killed 9,402 men in England and Wales and 790 men in Scotland

Our vessel is a no- frills, 4 oar/1 helm wooden rowing boat generously lent to us by the Lochaber Sea Cadets.  We’ll be supported by two small powered craft which will act as our support and sleeping accommodation during what will be a gruelling  6 days trip.  We’ll row all day long; develop blisters in places we didn’t know we could have them; get attacked by midges and have to cope with the notoriously challenging wind and waves of three huge lochs.

We ask you to support us by donating however much you feel you can to Prostate Action.  Why?

·         Because you may have a relative or loved one who has suffered prostate cancer

·         Because you may have a relative or loved one whom you never ever want to suffer from prostate cancer

·         This excellent cause is helping to fund the increase in public awareness of and research into one of the UK’s most common cancers

The costs of the expedition are being met by the crew so all sponsorship donations will go direct to Prostate Action.   Please be sure to tick the box which allows Prostate Action to claim back tax on your donation.

Thank you so much for your time and generous donations,

The crew,

Rod Bromfield, Rob Allen, Vince Harte, Dave Lea, Dave Dabney, Dave Robinson, Norman Adnett, Adrian Yelland and our very own supporting Scot, Gareth Cross.
