Story

JOB DONE......

On Saturday 19th / Sunday 20th of June I  completed the 1000 miles in 24 hour ride in support of the Royal British Legion.

I did this last year (getting onto the event late) and swore I would do it again as soon as possible AND get the fundraising ball rolling ASAP.

A long distance charity ride was something that I had always wanted to do and considered the 2009 event a real challenge (and it was) ; i'll consider this 2010 ride as my lap-of-honour .

Initially I was planning on doing the North Clockwise route but when they brought the start times forward I changed my mind and opted for the anti-clockwise route again...i just did not want to be riding down the A1 at night...

05:30 Departed Squires
Fuel stop at Alnwick about 07:15 (nice clear roads UP the A1 in daylight)
and into Berwick by 08:00
(breakfast) :-)
Then it was off again to Edinburgh , a quick fuel stop at Aviemore then the long slog up to Wick.  It was VERY windy up on the coast road but that didn't spoil the fun or the beauty of it all........Long stop for lunch at Wick Tesco and back on the road at 15:00...making good progress and no hassles.

Down to Inverness, quick drink and a fuel top up before riding the length of Loch Ness to Fort William (arrived at about 18:00 (so a good 4 hours plus ahead of my time last year having set off 2 1/2 hours earlier than last year)
Followed the Low Road through Glencoe (stopped for while here to take some photos) , on to Crianlarich and then to Glasgow passing Loch Lomond making it well south of Glasgow as night fell (we were coming up to Southwaite Services as it got dark.....) Clear motorways, and not feeling the cold at all (right gear you see :-) ) saw us into Birch services around 1/4 to 1 in the morning...met up with Kaptain Kwak (from the ZRX Owners Club) so had a natter and a coffee with him for longer than planned but we had plenty of time in hand (only 53 miles to go at this point and we had already covered 1010 miles....Left Birch and headed for the finish, getting back to a nice welcoming committee there at 02:09 having done 1063 miles in 20 hours and 39 minutes.  All without incident, hassle or worry.  man these ZRX bikes are simply AWESOME...never missed a beat, did everything I asked of it and still gave well over 40 mpg...

and there you have it, like I say...JOB DONE :-)

for the records

External donations of £30 have been received by me:
£20 from Fred Starr (my father-in-law)
£10 from Andy (Kaptain Kwacker)

Thank you both.....

so , what to do next year,  1500 miles ?  2000 miles ?   who knows...

Please continue to support this event, let's try and double (maybe triple) this amount.  Thanks

Steve

Some of you have asked about the image, well it is a still taken from one of my drag-racing runs at York raceway...to see the video take a look here:

not my quickest run but good all the same.

A little bit about Iron Butt:

The Iron Butt Association is dedicated to safe, long-distance, endurance motorcycle riding. Although based in the United States, they have over 24,000+ members world-wide. The Iron Butt Association (IBA) does not have membership in the traditional sense. The IBA is a little more loose knit organization than most clubs. Generally speaking there are several ways to earn membership. One of the most common methods of entry into the IBA is to complete one of the rides they sponsor, such as the “Saddlesore 1000” (1000 miles in less than 24 hours).
