Thiepval to Tyne Cot · 29 July 2017

The UK's leading charity for veterans' mental health. For over a century, we've helped former servicemen and women deal with issues like trauma, anxiety, depression and post-traumatic stress disorder. Today, we provide support to veterans from every service and every conflict.

Story

In July 2017 we finished a 100 mile march at Tyne Cot in Belgium. We had started at the Thiepval Memorial on the Somme and marched for four days in full First World War uniform with hobnail boots carrying a rifle and webbing. A little bit older but not much wiser we are setting off on our travels again to support Combat Stress.

We will march through the First World War battlefields, paying our respects at various memorials and cemeteries along the way. Again, this is going to be a challenging four days, finishing at Tyne Cot Cemetery on the afternoon of the 4th August. Once again we will be proudly raising money for a fantastic charity who have been continuously supporting veterans since 1919.

Every step will be an effort especially with wearing the same uniform and kit as worn by the Tommy of the First World War and, its in memory of their actions that drive us on to help those veterans of today. Not all wounds are visible and it was during the Great War that shell shock would eventually recognised as an condition that required treatment.

Six of the participants taking part have over 140 years of military service and ask you to generously support this unique event.
