Today 17 babies will die, the tragic victims of stillbirth or neonatal death. This is a statistic that is seeing no signs of decreasing, and behind each number is a family rocked to the foundations by the death of their baby.
This shocking figure, the loss of 6,500 babies every year, is something the public is not generally aware of. Most people think stillbirths don’t happen in the 21st century. Yet stillbirth in the UK is 10 times more common than cot death.
At Sands, the stillbirth and neonatal death charity, we feel this number of deaths is totally unacceptable. We have launched the Why17? campaign to raise awareness of this devastating loss and to ask the question:
“Why are 17 babies a day dying and what can be done to halt this national tragedy?”
A little bit about ourselfs, we're Dawn 25 and Dave 29 , been together for 4 years and Tilly is our first child.
The pregnancy wasnt easy from the beginning. At 7weeks Dawn got rushed in to hospital as she started bleeding, we were told she was having a suspected miscarrage. However it turned out that Dawn had a condition which her uterus is heart shaped and not bean shaped (bicorniate uterus) which means its hard for us to concieve and that the baby had less space to grow in and meant she was at a high risk of having the baby premiture so we had to be on guard and ready from 35weeks, and the baby had to be monitored closely by having growth scans and heart monitor (the usual stuff they do) pretty much every month.
We got passed 35weeks and managed to get to the due date all fine and healthy but still waiting...We found out that Tilly's heart stopped 7days after my due date (41 weeks exactly.)
Our midwife came around that date because we were getting impatient and Tilly's movements werent as bold as they had been, so she was going to do stretch and sweep to induce me but before she could do that she had to check Tilly's heart beat.
The last time she came to visit her heart monitor machine wasnt working correctly so we had to have it done at the hospital and have an emergency scan. with that in mind happening last time she then couldnt pick up Tilly's heart beat and wasnt sure if it was her machine again so off we went again to the hospital. Dawn says she knew as soon as the midwife said she wasnt sure, she knew Tilly was gone and it was later confirmed at the hospital.
The next day (25 june 2010) Dawn gave birth to Tilly at 2:29pm and she weighed 7Ib 2oz and she looked exactly as we pictured her from all the scans. She was totally gorgeous.
