Updated on Apr 23rd 2012 at 10:47 PM from the JustGiving API

I did it! It may have taken me 04:32:12 with 19168 other finishers ahead of me, but I completed the 26.2 miles. The weather was great and the crowds fantastic, but it still felt a very long way. It was worth it though, knowing I was raising money for a great cause. Cherry Lodge, Kerry and I all say a big thank you to everyone who has made a donation.

The number of people diagnosed with cancer at some point in their lifetime is now more than 1 in 3, with the figure continuing to increase. If you include friends and family whose lives are touched in some way through caring and support, then nearly all the population is likely to come into contact with the disease at some stage in their lives.

Sadly, we are only too aware of this. In June last year Kerry was diagnosed with breast cancer. The news was a huge shock to us all and very difficult to come to terms with. We had to talk to the children and explain what it means for them and mummy, before informing close family and friends.

The summer was a difficult time before we received the full diagnosis, followed by surgery in August. Kerry had a few weeks to recover before undergoing chemotherapy every 3 weeks from September to December. The last session was 3 days after christmas day.

Once Kerry had recovered from the final chemotherapy session, she began her course of radiotherapy. Kerry had to attend hospital every day over a period of 3 weeks for the treatment, with the course finishing in mid-February.

This period has been very difficult for us all, but would have been much harder were it not for the care and support available at Cherry Lodge Cancer Care. This independent charity provides cancer information and support for the North London and South Hertfordshire area, often filling the gap that cannot be provided by the NHS.

Kerry has visited Cherry Lodge frequently over the last 6 months, receiving support, advice and complementary therapies. Kerry had acupuncture before and after each chemotherapy session to help reduce nausea and enjoyed massage to aid recovery from surgery. Kerry has also benefitted from counselling sessions with trained volunteers, as well as receiving advice and information on health, nutrition and clothing. Kerry also attends drop-in sessions to talk to staff, volunteers and other people going through a similar experience.

All the services offered by Cherry Lodge are provided free of charge. A large part of their income comes from fundraising and we wanted to do something to help them continue their vital work. Sponsoring me to run the London marathon will do just that.

I am trying to raise £1500.00. Please give generously to this fantastic cause.

Donating through JustGiving is simple, fast and totally secure.
