Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I had a heart and lungs transplant in 1988 when I was 16 years old, the venture was a collaboration between GOSH and Papworth Hospital because paediatric transplants were in their early days.

After my transplant I was transferred to the care of
Papworth, where they have been looking after me ever since. As you will agree, they are doing a fine job!

As you may know, Papworth Hospital is an internationally leading hospital specialising in the treatment of complex heart and lung conditions.

Pioneering medicine and innovative surgical advances at Papworth Hospital have not only transformed the lives of hundreds of thousands
of patients but also helped shape cardiothoracic medicine internationally. This has been made possible through the generous funding provided by Papworth Hospital Charity.

This programme is in response to the worldwide shortage of donor hearts for transplantation. A research team at Papworth Hospital, supported by Papworth Hospital Charity, has developed a new technique that significantly increases the number of hearts available for transplantation.

The research shows that heart transplants from a new group of potential donors – known as DCD transplantation or ‘Non-Beating Heart Transplantation’ – could save hundreds of lives internationally as the heart transplant waiting list continues to grow. This innovative technique had
enabled surgeons at Papworth to utilise donor hearts which were previously considered too damaged to transplant.

Unfortunately every year, hundreds of patients still die through the lack of available organs for transplantation. This new procedure has enabled Papworth Hospital to increase the number of people receiving a heart transplant at Papworth by 40% in the first year alone. Each and every life saved through this ground-breaking procedure has been made possible through the generous donations of Papworth supporters and we can only continue
with further charitable support.

Your support can really make a difference, not just for Papworth Hospital, but for cardiothoracic patients around the world. Performing the UK’s first successful heart transplant in 1979, and the world’s first heart-lung-liver transplant in 1986, Papworth Hospital is responsible for a great number of medical ‘firsts’ and with the financial support and investment
provided by the hospital’s charity, we hope to be responsible for many more.

Please help me to break through my target and help Papworth to lead the world in transplant care and research.
