The West Midlands Neonatal Transfer Service (WMNTS) was set up in 2006 to provide 24 hour a day, 7 days a week transfer service for babies needing a different level of care to that which can be provided in their original hospital. In 2010, 1400 transfers were performed by dedicated teams of doctors, advanced neonatal nurse practitioners and neonatal nurses. Not only does the team move babies for neonatal intensive care (including cooling and surgery) but also returns the babies back to their home hospital when they no longer need the specialist care that is been delivered away from their home.
The WMNTS are in the process of raising funds to purchase items of equipment which will assist the team in saving babies lives.
Kelly Costello and Ruth Prior (mothers of babies who have utilised our service) kindly instigated the fundraising process for a very important item of equipment - a cooling mattress - every year in the UK, over 1000 newborn babies die or suffer brain damage due to lack of oxygen at birth.
Cooling treatment is given to babies who have suffered hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), brain injury due to asphyxia, and are at risk of death or severe long term disability. Cooling is administered for 72 hours followed by gradual re-warming to normal body temperature in intensive care. The effectiveness of this neuroprotective treatment increases when cooling is started immediately, within the first six hours after the injury.
