WE'RE CLIMBING THE MATTERHORN
Some months ago in a rash moment we agreed that it would be a good idea to try to climb the Matterhorn, and our adventure began.
In February we contacted a mountain guide in Zermatt to find out more. A plan for nine days walking and climbing in the mountains was put in place with an ascent of the Matterhorn being the aim for last two days, weather and fitness for the task permitting.
Six months on, with climbs and scrambles in Snowdonia, Scotland and South Wales under our belts, and considerably lighter and fitter, we feel well prepared for our trip to Zermatt.
Edward Whymper ascended 100,000ft over 18 days in 1865, the year he became the first person to climb the Matterhorn, aged 26. We have set ourselves a challenge to ascend 20,000ft in 9 days.
However, this isn't just for fun. We're paying all costs for the trip ourselves, but we aim to fundraise for some worthwhile causes to give us even more incentive not to give up!
Below are details of the charities we will be supporting. Any donations would be greatly appreciated and make this wonderful (and slightly mad!) trip even more worthwhile.
COMBAT STRESS
This charity was formed at a time when little was known about mental health problems affecting ex-servicemen and women in conflict zones. Now Combat Stress is playing a vital role in helping over 5,000 ex British Armed Forces cope with the aftermath of their service to our Country. Recent conflicts such as Afghanistan and Iraq, have meant that Combat Stress's work is more needed than ever. Combat Stress are in urgent need of funds to carry out their essential support.
St. MARY'S CHURCH, CAPEL-Y-FFIN
St. Mary's is one of the smallest churches in Wales. Tucked high in the hills of the Black Mountains on the Gospel Pass, it's very existence relies heavily on the hard work of its small congregation. Originally thought to be a pagan site, the original chapel was built for the Prior of Llanthony Priory to enable him to go on retreat from the hurly burly of Llanthony. It continues to offer solace and peace to travellers today. Toby would like some of the funds raised to go to St. Marys. Please send a cheque via Toby "St Mary,s Church, Capel-y-ffin".Llwyn-on, Llanthony, Abergavenny, NP7 7NW.
INDIA
In 2003 Peter and Carp spent a magical three weeks following Jim Corbett’s footsteps in the foothills of the Himalayas. They have returned many times to Kaladhungi to stay with the Anand Family who organised our trip. They are full of admiration for the support they give, both financial and physical, to their local community and the surrounding area. Some of the funds raised will go to providing solar energy to this community. To donate to this please send a cheque made out to Caroline Horsburgh, Glan yr Afon, Erwood, Builth Wells, LD2 3SJ.
