MAG - Cycle Somme to Flanders 2010 · 14 July 2010 ·

Every single day, 17 people are killed or injured because of landmines and other explosive weapons. Almost half of all civilian casualties are children. MAG finds and destroys these weapons to save lives and rebuild futures; helping people to grow crops, attend school and build homes.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.

I am riding for MAG (Mines Advisory Group) which is a humanitarian organisation clearing the remnants of conflict (landmines and unexploded bombs) for the benefit of communities worldwide. These weapons kill 15 people each day and maim many others. They are indiscriminate and are a particular danger to children.  £15 enables MAG staff to clear about ten square metres of land. MAG is co-laureate of the 1997 Nobel Peace Prize.  See also :-

The ride is 312 km spread over three days of cycling. The start is in Le Touquet, passing through the major battlefields of the Western Front and ending at the Menin Gate Memorial in Ypres.

I plan to include a visit to the grave of my maternal grandfather who died of his wounds on 1st August 1917, the first day of the 3rd battle of Ypres (Passchendaele). He is buried with over 3300 of his comrades in the Dozinghem Military Cemetery between Krombeke, Poperinge and Ypres.  His name is listed on the memorial in his home town (Shaw) - hence the photo.
The details of Dozinghem can be found here :-  Dozinghem

My minimum fundraising target is £1120 by 30th April 2010 with a further £480 by 11th of June.
