Story

To try and lose weight and regain some semblance of fitness I have decided to undertake events doing something that I enjoy, Swimming.

I have entered two major open water swimming events in 2012, the first is the British Gas Great North Swim in Lake Windermere on 23rd June, a swim of one mile. However, this is just a warm-up.

The second event is known worldwide as an iconic swim, from Alcatraz island to San Francisco Marina Bay on 26th August. A swim distance of 1.5 miles in an area that is well known for its difficulty as established by numerous films of prisoners escaping (or not!!) from Alcatraz when it was a prison. The tides are unpredictable, the undercurrents are very strong, the water temperature is cold (approx same as the North Sea) and not forgetting the Great White Sharks, who make the Bay their home.

It did appear a little selfish to attempt these two events just for my own personal pride and what better incentive than to raise funds for a worthwhile cause.

A number of family and friends have received support from St Benedicts Hospice and I have always been astounded by the level of care and support offered under the most difficult of circumstances.
