This year is my 50th year (I know its hard to believe!) and to celebrate this I want to do something different, challenging and at the same time rewarding.

For this reason I have entered the Great Wall of China Marathon taking place on the 1st May 2012. This marathon is one of the most challenging marathons in the world, due to the 20,518 steps each runner has to navigate and the hilly terrain.

I figured I could also do some good with this and have decided to use the marathon as a way to raise money for the Help for Heroes charity, with my target being to raise £5130 = 25p for each step.

Help for Heroes is a British Charity launched on 1 October 2007 to help provide better facilities for British servicemen and women wounded since September 11, 2001. It was founded by Bryn Parry OBE and his wife Emma Parry OBE after they visited soldiers at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

As I see it our servicemen and women are separated from their families giving their all to protect our way of life in hostile and dangerous environments. All too often we hear on the news of our people being killed and wounded. This is my way of doing a little bit to help those who are injured and to say thank you.
