St Neots Sprint Triathlon · 15 May 2011

Nephrotic Syndrome (NS) affects approx 10,000 people in the UK, majority are children, with no known cause or cure. The current treatment is non-specific and highly toxic, with many potentially life-threatening complications. NeST funds Bristol Children's Hospital in researching NS to find a cure.

Story

On May 15th, along with my uncle Graham and cousin Jake, I am taking part in my first ever Sprint Triathlon. It includes a cold wake up 750m swim in a river, a long 20km bike ride whilst wet and a 5km run to finish with!

I'm doing this to raise money for NeST: http://www.nstrust.co.uk/index.php

In November, like many children and adults each year, my little cousin Louis was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome.

NS is a condition where a persons own immune system starts to attack the kidneys. The kidneys then begin to leak blood and proteins, which causes the body to start to retain water. Untreated, the kidneys become damaged with other implications because of this.

Most little children who suffer from NS grow out of it and thankfully Louis has responded well to steroids. We hope that his kidneys stay healthy!

However many children and adults have and do suffer from NS and so far doctors have still not been able to fully identify the cause or cure for this condition.

All the money I raise will go to NeST, in order to: 1. Raise awareness of the disease, 2. Raise funds for research and 3. Support sufferers of NS and their carers.
