Pump Aid works with rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa to deliver improved water and sanitation services. We believe that safe protected water points, adequate sanitation and better hygiene improve health and education outcomes and socio-economic opportunities.

Story

The right to clean water and the freedom to live healthily:

Over 884 million people in the developing world live without a safe supply of water, and more than 3 million people die every year from a lack of clean water.

Unsafe water causes diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery, which in turn kill millions of people every year.

More than half of hospital beds in Sub Saharan Africa are occupied by patients suffering from sanitation and water related diseases.

4000 children die from these diseases every day. They are the biggest killer of young children, killing over five times more than HIV/AIDS and twice as many as malaria.

In 1999, Pump Aid was founded. Pump Aid provides communities in Sub-Saharan Africa with sustained access to clean water and safe, hygienic sanitation by raising funds to build and install Elephant Pumps and Elephant Toilets.  Please take a moment to click on the Pump Aid logo (top right of this page) to read more.

I am hosting A Thousand Cranes for Pump Aid on February 5th 2012. The aim of this project is to undertake the challenge of making 1000 origami cranes to raise funds for the continued vital work of Pump Aid.

In Japan, the Crane symbolizes hope.  Based on an ancient Japanese legend, anyone who folds a thousand origami cranes, which are then strung together ('senbazuru'), will be granted a wish.

Our wish is to see the number of people dying from preventable diseases caused by a lack of access to, and unclean, water decline.

For every 1.00 GBP donated to this project, one of our cranes will be strung to a piece of string. We must make and string together 1000 cranes in total to complete the senbazuru. 1000 cranes = 1000 GBP  its that simple. Please help support this project by donating today!

Thank you so much for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
