Orchards for Ethiopia · 2 November 2012

We plant urban trees in parks, streets, schools and housing estates across the UK, as well as internationally, revitalising these areas and improving the lives of the people who live in them. We strengthen communities through volunteering opportunities and inspire children to grow and eat good food.

Story

Ethiopia is one of the poorest countries on earth with astonishingly high levels of food insecurity. 49% of the population is malnourished.

We want to plant 8,000 fruit trees and provide life saving sources of deliciously nutritious fruit to Addis Ababa’s hungriest residents, including single mothers living with HIV and Aids.

A single apple tree can provide up to 100kg of fruit in just one harvest. If sold, this fruit could provide a single mother living in Addis with 35% of her yearly income.

We won’t just plant trees. We will also teach local residents the skills they need to sow, grow and care for the trees themselves.

With your help, we can invest in the future of Addis Ababa’s urban forest and provide single mothers and vulnerable women with the tools and knowledge feed their families.
