Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
Endometriosis is the second most common gynaecological condition in the UK, affecting 1 in 10 women, yet 80 % of the population have never even heard of it.
Due to this staggering lack of awareness, many women put up with their symptoms for years, believing them to be 'normal'. The lack of awareness of the condition during my teens and twenties meant that by the time my symptoms were taken seriously the diagnosis came too late. This resulted in numerous operations, masses of medication and failed IVF attempts. Not surprisingly this had a devastating impact not only on me but on those around me, affecting my marriage, my chances of having a family and my career.
In a recent article featured in the Endometriosis UK magazine, all the physical and emotional aspects associated with Endometriosis were likened with permanently carrying a rather weighty backpack. For me, after 25 years, the physical aspects became too much and my dream to be rid of the debilitating pain only came true following a full hysterectomy.
It is a great relief that such a weight has been lifted and although the physical and emotional scars remain I have been given a new lease of life and an opportunity to raise awareness about Endometriosis. Following my hysterectomy I trained with a real backpack in preparation for a trek to Everest Basecamp and I am very pleased to say that on 13th November 2010 I was successful.
Awareness about Endometriosis is key. The saying “better late than never” does not apply where the diagnosis of Endometriosis is concerned so I am passionate to ensure that for other women it is never again 'too late'.
