Story

Tri-4-life 2022 Centenary Mount Everest Expedition

In May 2022 a group of lifelong friends from Wirral will be retracing the famous steps of George Mallory in a centenary celebration of the The 1922 British Mount Everest expedition. This was a wildly ambitious mountaineering expedition, the first with the express aim of ascending Mount Everest.

It was also the first such journey that attempted to climb Everest using bottled oxygen. The expedition would attempt to summit Everest from the northern side out of Tibet, as the south side out of Nepal was closed to Western foreigners at the time. Unfortunately due to Chinese Government restrictions we are having to make our attempt from the South (Nepalese) side of the mountain.

George Mallory was the only participant on all three Everest expeditions in 1921, 1922 and 1924 and had discovered a route which, in his opinion, would allow an attempt on the summit.

Although the summit was never reached The expedition did establish a new world record climbing height of 8,326 meters (27,320 ft) which was subsequently exceeded on the 1924 expedition.

As young boys this team ran and played in the same streets as their childhood Everest Heroes, Mallory and Irvine having been local Wirral residents. it will be a huge honour to follow in their footsteps exactly one hundred years since their pioneering endeavour. We are also targeting the Northern (Tibetan) route. A preparatory Himalayan trip to Mera Peak and Baruntse took place last October and many other training/ fundraising events have been undertaken throughout the year to optimise our fitness and raise awareness. Updates will regularly appear on this page and on social media channels.

Tri4Life is a Wirral based charitable enterprise. A group of Friends from diverse backgrounds brought together in remembrance, friendship and a collective love of adventure and physical endeavour whilst raising funds for charities close to our hearts and promoting active, healthy lifestyles to today's youth.

Tri4life was born in 2000, the brainchild of Liam Hanlon, an inspirational leader. Over the subsequent years the team has cycled the length of the UK and Europe, biked across America, completed multiple Iron and Double Ironman length races, competed in the Marathon des Sables, Swam the Channel and Coast to Coast in Scotland, completed the Arch to Arc triathlon, most recently we aided the reconstruction efforts in the British Virgin Islands after the recent devastating hurricanes. There are several other events that I could mention if there is further interest (or see YouTube channel under Tri4life). Last year Liam hosted a Royal visit from HRH Princess Anne.

Many thousands of pounds have been raised for numerous causes along the way.

We have been seeking the next challenge to mark our 20th anniversary and, given Mallory and Irvine's local Wirral connections and the approaching Centenary of their fateful journey, have settled upon this attempt to scale Everest!

This is a challenge that we are not underestimating. Under the guidance of Adventure Peaks in Ambleside we have undertaken a 3 year program of progressively more arduous peaks and climbing skills courses in the hope of acquiring the necessary expertise and fitness to complete the challenge.

None of us are from a climbing background, many of us are above the age of 50, but all of us have a drive and passion to inspire others and raise money for good causes along the way. We all hope that this effort will massively boost the funds of our chosen charities, which are CAN (Community Action Nepal) and the local Wirral (WUTH) and Countess of Chester Hospital charities. Our Mission

“To further improve the quality of WUTH’s patient care, by issuing grants for the purchase of medical equipment, improvement of Trust facilities and for the direct enhancement of the patient experience in other imaginative ways. This is achieved through the spontaneous generosity of the general public and by fundraising activities, events and appeals.”

All funds raised through WUTH Charity will assist Wirral University Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust to provide the best possible patient experience, for example through improving patient environments, creating welcoming visitors’ areas and purchasing world-class medical equipment. The Charity never makes purchases for the benefit of staff, and never funds projects outside the Trust. We often focus on the very inexpensive ‘little things that mean a lot’ - every donation we receive – large or small – makes a difference.

The money raised from the Everest attempt will be supporting the Tiny Stars Appeal:

Tiny Stars Appeal

The Neonatal Unit at Arrowe Park Hospital is a designated Level 3 Neonatal Intensive Care Unit – one of only two in Cheshire and Merseyside. This means they are able to care for some of the most poorly babies. Our Neonatal Unit currently has 24 cots which enable the team to provide specialised care for babies from around 22 weeks of pregnancy.

Many of the babies are born early (premature). Some babies born around the time they are due (term) can also have problems, some requiring a brief stay with us and others a more intensive, longer stay. We know that improving the facilities will make a big difference for our smallest patients and their families.

The refurbishment includes and extensive reconfiguration of the ground floor of the Women and Children’s Hospital , Arrowe Park to expand the existing neonatal unit, purchasing world class medical equipment and creating enhanced parent facilities. WUTH Charity needs to raise £1.5million over the next three years to make this happen.

About Countess of Chester Hospital NHS Charitable Funds

The Countess Charity is probably best known in the community for the Babygrow Appeal. However the team works with the local community to raise money for over 80 funds across the hospital – each one making a real difference to patient care. The money raised from the Everest Climb will be predominantly going towards the Blue Skies Balcony Appeal:

The new appeal is to build a garden balcony on our Intensive Care Unit (ICU) so that our poorly patients can benefit from the outdoors in a safe and infection-controlled environment. All patients, their visitors and staff are set to benefit from this innovative improvement that will make it easier and safer to move patients outside with no loss of space to the existing unit which opened in 2014.
