Story
Thanks for taking the time to visit Sophie and Sam's justgiving page. Sophie, Sam and their family lost their Nana, Margaret Croft in the EllenorLions Hospice in 2010 and felt they could never repay the Hospice for the love and care they showed their Nana near the end of her life or for the support they gave their family, but what they can do is help raise a fraction of the £4million it takes the Hospice to stay running each year.... they decided to compete in 6 Triathlons in 2012.
The biggest ones being:
Sophie will be competing in the Virgin-Active London Triathlon, the UK’s largest triathlon with 12,000 participants expected to hit the streets of London.
The event consists of 1.5km open water swim in the Royal Victoria Docks, followed by a 40km cycle through canary wharf and along the Embankment to Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament. As if this wasn’t enough already the final event is a 10km run around London’s ExCel centre.
The London Triathlon will be Sophie’s first Triathlon, and will be a big challenge – especially considering she doesn’t like dirty water and resembles Bambi on Ice when on her bike…!!!!
Sam competed in the 2011 London Triathlon and finished in a respectable time of 2Hrs 46Mins. The ‘respectable time’ and too much Old Wray Jamaican Rum one night led to a huge over confidence and Sam signed up to compete in the Tri-Hard Hellvellyn Triathlon.
From London being the UK’s largest triathlon, Hellvellyn is arguably one of our country’s smallest with less than 1000 people taking part. Hellvellyn is situated in the Lake District and is the 3 highest peak in England standing at a staggering 3,117 feet.
The event kicks off with a 1 mile open water swim in Ullswater lake and is swiftly followed by a 38 mile bike ride taking in “the surrounding area” (lots of Hill’s) and includes cycling up the Kirkstone pass – which is affectionately known as “The Struggle”. As if the Swim and Cycle wasn’t enough the final event is the run UP Hellvellyn – 9 miles of fell running and scrambling over rock to reach the summit and then back down again - survival kits are mandatory for each participants!
Both events take a huge amount of Training and sacrifice – Sophie is working on giving up chocolate and Sam will eventually sober up enough to start riding his bike – but both are for the very worthy cause of supporting the ElleanorLions Hospice so they can continue to support families in their time of need, as they did for us.
