When many people think back to their childhood years, they are fortunate enough to remember a time when they were free from all major responsibilities and commitments. For many young carers, their childhood years can be very different.

Imagine if you had been looking after your physically disabled mother and caring for your two younger siblings, or working for your GCSEs while cooking, cleaning and caring for your mother who is disabled and has mental health problems. You would have had less time to do your schoolwork, play with your friends and enjoy your hobbies. You might also have experienced severe emotional traumas, resulting in depression or disruptive behaviour; you may have been bullied at school, physically or emotionally.

Most young carers willingly take on their caring role. They do not necessarily want to stop being carers, but they need help to ensure their education and personal development is not affected. The fifi & ally Hopes and Dreams Fund aims to allow young carers to take a break from their caring responsibilities, fulfil their “hopes and dreams” and make their lives a little bit easier.
