GVI Phoenix Rio Dulce Kayak Challenge · 10 July 2011

We have over 70 projects worldwide and our purpose is building an international community of people united in a common goal of making an impact on global issues, raising awareness of the need for protection of our environment, and meeting the challenges presented by natural and unexpected disasters.

Story

Hi! In July I'm going to attempt to kayak 50km down the Rio Dulce from Lago Izabal in Guatemala to the Carribean coast, despite no training in kayaking and a slight fear of being lost to the crocs. So... you wonder, why should I donate for you to have a good old adventure? Well, any money you kindly donate will fund GVI-CT projects, not me! I'm actually going to be volunteering for GVI for 3 months in support of its projects in Central America, following on from first-hand experience of the real difference GVI Phoenix makes to lives in Ecuador and Peru from the 6 month internship programme I did in 2009. It really was an eye opener and made me realise what a privileged upbringing and education most of us have and take for granted in the UK. Fundraising from GVI-CT in Guatemala is aiding with everything from food to scholarships to new classrooms, care for the elderly, agricultural initiatives and a small business centre for the women of the community.
Without this project, the children would simply not receive an education. By donating just a small amount, GVI can continue community schemes and the children can continue to receive breakfast and fruit.

GBP10 buys the necessary educational utensils for one child per year

GBP25 buys the inscription fees and utensils necessary for national school

GBP50 buys fruit for 30 children for one month

GBP200 pays for the salary of one local teacher per month.
For further information on GVI Phoenix, see http://gviphoenix.blogspot.com/

Anything you donate will be much appreciated. Please don't think that the money will go in a black hole, or that there is no need to worry about people who live half-way round the world. The truth is that our standard of living depends on an imbalanced global economic system and a lot of our every-day choices already impact, sometimes negatively, on livelihoods around the world. I can vouch for the sincerity and dedication of the people who work on this project. Thank you so much, Trish.
