The Challenge: To row from Turkey to Cyprus, something that as far we know has never been successfully completed in modern times, and raise money for Cancer Research and Children in Need Foundation - North Cyprus in the process. It's a 90km/ 55mile stretch of open sea, which we are aiming to cross in around 16 hours. We will be in a double sculls boat, adapted for the task in hand for optimal speed/stability. We will try and leave on the 30th of May, 2011, from Anamur in southern Turkey, although this will be subject to weather conditions. We may have to wait a day or two if it is too windy.
The Charities: Cancer Research UK and Children in Need Foundation - North Cyprus are worthy charities indeed. Cancer Research UK is the World's leading charity dedicated to beating cancer through research. They have saved millions of lives by discovering new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. Children in Need Foundation are committed to helping support children’s work in North Cyprus from special schools to cancer treatment. The money donated will be divided between both charities.
Two years ago, the Swansons raised a lot of money with their valiant but doomed attempt at the crossing, so we're all hoping to better that exceptional effort this year!
