Story
In May this year, Uganda Youth and Women’s Effort Fighting AIDS opened its education centre in Kazo with the intention of providing free education to the most vulnerable children and provide a place for households to receive training on how they can generate an income. The centre was built on land donated by the local council and has been run and funded by the community for the past six months. At present the centre is educating 30 vulnerable children at nursery stage and has negotiated reduced school fees for others at primary and secondary school.
However, the land was donated by the council for one year and is likely to be taken away if there is any change in political leadership. The centre was also constructed on minimal funds (under £400) and currently has leaks in the roof and walls. It is also situated next to the public toilet, which is convenient but sometimes makes for a distracting smell.
We are fundraising to move the centre into a better building, one with bricks, cement and a proper roof. We are also looking for materials and proper facilitation for our volunteer teachers. The building rent will be £100 per month, each teacher will be £15 per month (we have 2) and materials will be £10 per month.
In addition UYWEFA has kindly been donated materials by Tools With A Mission to begin vocational training vulnerable households so that they can generate the income they need to pay for their children’s education. These tools include 4 Boxes of Materials, 1 Box Haberdashery, 5 Electric Table Top Sewing Machines, 5 Manual Table Top Sewing Machines, 2 Knitting Machines, 4 sacks of Machine Knitting Wool, 2 Tradesman Carpenters Kits, 1 Workshop Carpenters Kit.
Whilst the materials are free the shipping costs are not and we need to raise £500 to pay for the shipping, custom duties and various import taxes. The only way that the education centre will survive long-term is if people have the skills and opportunity to generate their own income so it is vital that we raise this money for materials that would cost far more in Uganda.
If we can raise money to run the education centre for four months and train people in income-generating activities at the same time we believe that this project then be sustained by the community.
On 27th November I am running the MTN Kampala Marathon to raise money for UYWEFA. It is my first marathon, it will be about 30 degrees and around the city built on 7 hills (they have added more since) so please donate to a cause where you know that the money will go straight to those who need it most.
