Story

We do have a tendency to love a bit of a challenge here in the Division of Nutritional Sciences at the University of Nottingham.  Previous feats have included the Yorkshire 3 Peaks (24 miles) and the Lyke Wake Walk (40 miles in 24 hours).  This year we are casting our walking boots aside and have decided to get on our bikes and cycle from coast to coast.  During the first weekend in September, 12 of us will cycle the 155 miles from Seascale to Whitby.  This is an iconic route that will take us through the mountainous Lake District and over both Wrynose and Hardknott Pass - the King and Queen of hill climbs in England with some wonderful 30 % hairpins to look forward to.  We will then cycle across the Yorkshire Dales and through the North York Moors.  On the Sunday we will arrive in Whitby and dip our wheels into the North Sea - hopefully just in time to enjoy some well deserved Fish and Chips!

This trip is a huge challenge for all of us.  It is a long way and is incredibly undulating to say the least!  We have decided that we would like to make our efforts worthwhile and raise as much money as possible to fund dementia research.  Currently 1 in 3 of us has a friend or family member with dementia and this number is growing.  For those affected, living with dementia is hard and can be a very worrying and upsetting time.  The University of Nottingham Life Cycle 5 scheme has committed to raise £350 000 to fund dementia research.  This money will enable them to use their Nobel Prize winning expertise in MRI scanning to conduct world-leading research into the different ways that dementia damages brain cells.  Ultimately this will improve the lives of those suffering from dementia and those who care for them.  We would like to support this scheme and all money raised will contribute to The University of Nottingham Life Cycle 5 £350 000 target.  So, if you would like to support us just click ‘donate’ and on behalf of all of us here in the Division of Nutritional Science we would like to thank you for you generosity.
