Story
In April 2010 I shall be running the notorious Marathon des Sables.
The MdS is a six day 250km ultramarathon across the desert in southern Morocco, where the temperatures can soar to 120 degrees. The total distance covered is the equivalent of six regular marathons, the longest single stage of the race being 90km (a little over two back to back marathons!).
As if the distance and terrain didn't make this challenging enough, competitors must carry all personal belongings and food for the entire event in their backpack (weighing on average of 10 kg!). The MdS is often cited as being the toughest footrace on Earth....now you know why....
Training for this event has been a tremendous undertaking on my part, involving various international marathons, and 5 am training runs into work each day (15 miles with the Collins English Dictionary and Thesaurus in my backpack).
I wanted to use this opportunity to raise money for an African charity. It was very hard to choose one as there are so many worthy causes out there. However, this charity really stood out for me. The money raised helps to fund secondary education for children orphaned by HIV. I believe that education is fundamental in promoting the prevention of HIV, and offers these children the opportunity to better their circumstances.
All donations go directly to the charity as I have covered the cost of this race myself. So please, make a donation - no matter how big or small, every penny helps.
Thank you for your support, and wish me luck!!
