It’s unacceptable that more than half of people diagnosed with the deadliest common cancer die within three months. That’s why they need and deserve more. More research, more funding, more breakthroughs. More than hope. Together we’ll make that possible.

Story

We (that’s Claire, Steph, Vicky and Victoria) are fundraising for Pancreatic Cancer UK. PCUK supports those affected by the disease, investing in research, lobbying for greater recognition of pancreatic cancer, and being there for everyone involved in the fight.

One of those people affected by the disease is Fiona, Claire’s long-time college friend who lost her husband Jim to the disease in February 2015 aged just 37. Fiona turns 30 in October 2016 and decided to dedicate the year between her 29th and 30th birthday trying to raise as much awareness and money as possible for the charity by devising / accepting 30 challenges which she had to undertake in the space of the 12months (read more at https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Fiona-Harding3).

Inspired by Fiona’s ‘30 by 30 challenge’ (follow her story at https://30challengesby30.wordpress.com/) the Very Serious Gin Club are swapping gins, tonics and scorecard banter for lycra, mud and some serious teamwork as we take on Pretty Muddy on Saturday 17 September 2016. Pretty Muddy is a muddy (funny that) 5K obstacle course that we’ll have to climb over, crawl under and charge through. We need your support.

Why?

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers. Just 3-6% of those diagnosed survive for five years. Yes, you read correctly THREE to SIX percent.

Survival rates for other cancers have improved over the last 30-40 years - YAY! Unfortunately the same cannot be said for pancreatic cancer.

Studies show that death rates for pancreatic cancer are increasing while most other cancers are declining.

Pancreatic cancer is nearly always diagnosed too late with 80% of pancreatic cancer patients having an average life expectancy of a mere 4-6 months.

Jim was only 37 years old.
