Hello!
I'm running in the Great South Run on Sunday 25th October 2009 in aid of the Hampshire Deaf Association. The money raised through this run will go towards of a number of projects and activities that support deaf children and young people.
One of these projects is Fun 4 You, a playscheme for deaf children, which like many charity projects during these hard times has recently come into funding difficultly It's common for deaf children to say "when I grow up I'm going to be hearing" or "what can deaf people do when they're adults?" - because many deaf children simply don't get a chance to meet deaf adults, they are often confused about being deaf and don't understand that they have the same opportunities as hearing people.
This run is really important to me because of my personal experiences of growing up as the only deaf child in the 'hearing world' which were very isolating, frustrating and confusing as there were very little opportunity for me to meet other deaf children and adults. Working for HDA with the deaf children for the last 5 years had given me so much confidence as a deaf person, which has now given me the determination to ensure that Fun 4 You project can continue to support deaf children.
