Story

Challenge is complete! Took me a little longer than expected and things didn't go quite to plan but I've done my 10,000 steps a day and target is reached! Thank you to everyone who has donated! You are still more than welcome to sponsor me if you would like to and I would be very grateful. The details and the link to the page where you give are listed below.

I thought I would put up all my facebook updates throughout the week to show everyone how my challenge went:

Monday:

managed to book my dental appt. It's in 7 days time :/ Still in a lot of pain but oh well. Got my pedometer on and I'm off to the horniman museum in dulwich in a few hours. Gonna walk there from Catford.

Well I've done my 6 miles but can't show a pic because the pedometer reset itself at 5.2 miles when I got moved about on the bus from dulwich to Waterloo. I ran from the stop outside the station to the BFI too!

Tuesday:

Just climbed the hill to the observatory. Really hoping the pedometer doesn't reset itself so I can take a pic of it saying 6 miles!

Grrr pedometer reset itself this afternoon at 6800 odd footsteps. Just looked at my pedometer, I've done another 3400 odd so I've done about 10,000 steps, which is the approximate average amount a woman in a developing country has to walk every day for food and water. I walked up to Greenwich observatory earlier today, managed it without stopping! And I walked from a friend's flat in Peckham to old Kent road. Pics are on my wall!

By the way thank you to all my amazing sponsors. I've raised £62 from your donations so far for my challenge. I just need £38 and I've hit my target. Only on day 2 now, 5 more to go :D

Wednesday:

is off to Glastonbury in the car with a little crew to film some celebrations for Women's Day. Pedometer is on!

Thursday:

At bushey Combe. Not quite at the top but things haven't quite worked out as planned

Friday: Couldn't update

Saturday:

I did about 6000 steps together so not quite 10,000! Add in the steps I missed yesterday and that's 16000 steps I need to make tomorrow! Last day of challenge. I've raised £92 so far, only £8 away from my £100 target! Thank you everyone who's donated so far, you're all amazing. If you haven't donated yet and would like to, there's still plenty of time. Let's show these women in poor countries that we are thinking of them and help them improve their lives.

Sunday:

I've reached my target of £100! Thank you to the lovely lady who donated the last £8. I'm so happy! And yet, the challenge is not quite over. I need to do 16,000 steps today to make up for yesterday and Friday, and of course I am still accepting sponsors because all donations are needed to help carry out the work needed to improve the lives of women in Africa, India, Brazil and other developing countries. Building wells, schools, setting up vaccination clinics and sex education services is where your pounds will be going!

Hi, thanks for taking the time to look at my page, yes, I'm asking for money! In the first week in March, I will be walking 10,000 footsteps a day around Greenwich in London for Care International, as my small way of showing a bit of solidarity with the millions of women and girls forced to walk many miles every day for water for their families. I am going to walk up to the Greenwich Observatory from Greenwich Park (hopefully every day) and get to know the (now Royal) Borough of Greenwich just a little better, before I finish Uni this Summer.

I'm doing this challenge because I want to help this cause and because I decided it was time for me to get fit again and try to live a healthier lifestyle.

I am aiming to raise £100 for this challenge. I raised £25 from my 5k run for Guide Dogs in Summer 2010, so I've really got to up my game this time.

Care International works in 87 countries, including those in Africa and Georgia, India, Brazil, helping impoverished women and girls.

The idea is that with the money I raise, Care International will improve the quality of life for some of those in need by establishing a source of clean water nearby or assisting them in accessing education. Here is a breakdown I received from Care International, of what my funds could do for them:

By walking 10,000 steps a day for a week and fundraising for CARE, you will be helping women and girls to break the cycle of poverty and this will benefit whole communities. For example:

Just £40 of your fundraising could train a community volunteer so that they can provide life-saving health support, especially to expectant mothers. This would mean that women don’t have to walk long distances to receive health care

£650 could provide a community with a fuel efficient stove to save a female’s daily walk to collect firewood

£1,500 could build a village well close to a community, saving females the back breaking task of collecting water each day and giving them time to go to school or earn money to support their families

Here are some facts about poverty:

70 % of the world’s poorest billion people are women and girls

In some countries a woman is more likely to die in childbirth than get an education

Two thirds of people who cannot read or write are women

Women and girls in developing countries are disproportionately affected by poverty, but they can succeed when they have the right tools and resources. That is why CARE works with women and girls to improve access to healthcare and education, build water and sanitation facilities, and to increase opportunities to help women earn a living. Supporters in Canada and Australia will also be taking on this challenge. Please help us to spread the word by telling people you know in these countries.
