Hello and thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page.
In October this year I am setting out to climb all 5895 metres (that's about 20,000 feet) of Kilimanjaro - African icon and the world's highest freestanding mountain.
At 3,000 metres the altitude officially becomes 'high' and by the time we get to the summit we're breathing air with around 9% oxygen. So, cheerily, it'll be a bit like going up Snowden twice a day for 6 days with a bad hangover, finding it hard to breathe and on the final day we start walking at midnight for 16 hours in temperatures of -20. Apparently when you get to the top everyone weeps, presumably from sheer relief, though the tears immediately freeze causing a new set of problems.
Pulling this one off involves big, personal, physical and mental challenges,
a) getting myself fit enough to have a fighting chance of making it to the top
b) acquisition of sufficient zen to overcome mild vertigo, being knackered, camping at sub zero temperatures, dealing with a bit of AMS but hopefully not HACE or HAPE (google for the full horror)
Why on earth am I putting myself through this? To raise proper cash money for a brilliant charity called Railway Children whose mission is to work with streetchildren around the world, the kind of children whose real and daily vulnerabilities make the discomforts of my Kili trek look insignificant.
As you may know I've been working on the play 'The Railway Children' at Waterloo Station this year (site specific, with a real train, playing til 8th Jan 2012, good seats available) the production has already generously donated to the charity and continues to do so, but I've also pledged to raise at least £2,500 myself. Please help me to meet if not exceed this target.
