My story
END WATER POVERTY.
A group of pioneering youths are participating in WALKforWATER, a sponsored challenge that will represent the daily plight of women and children in rural communities of Africa to get water.
For three days we will be walking on some of England’s toughest terrain and climbing England’s highest mountains. WALKforWATER will raise money for a charity known as Pump Aid, through our efforts we hope to raise enough money to give 1000 people in rural Africa access to safe drinking water.
Over 884 million people in the developing world live without a safe supply of water, and more than 3 million people die every year from a lack of clean water supplies.
People are forced to collect water from polluted sources such as rivers or unprotected wells, often a long way away from their homes. Unsafe water causes diseases such as cholera, typhoid and dysentery which in turn kill millions of people each year.
Collecting water is usually the work of women and girls. This can take up valuable hours of the day and often means that children miss out on education. Hours spent collecting water is hours not doing essential domestic chores or generating income. Walking long distances, sometimes alone, means that women and girls are vulnerable to attack.
Using simple but effective technology, Pump Aid builds water pumps, called Elephant Pumps that can be maintained by poor rural communities without any assistance.
