Thanks for taking the time to visit my JustGiving page. This is a big effort for me. As an amputee, cycling is not easy and there are many obstacles to overcome. I have had amazing help from Les from Pedals in Biggleswade (
www.pedalsofbaldock.co.uk/) and he has made many adjustments to my bike to enable me to cycle. At the moment, I am only capable of riding a short distance with stabilisers but Les has challenged me to participate in this event, 10th annual bike ride on May 20th 2012. (
www.champneys.com/About-Champneys/News/Charity-Bike-Ride)
So that doesn't give me long to go from cycling a very short distance (and we're talking metres here) with stabilisers, to cycling 22 miles in just under two months time! Oh well, I like a challenge!

Mon 21 May 2012 – My back aches, my knee aches, my hip aches, my stump is a bit sore and I am very tired but I am pleased as punch that I took part in the event and even more pleased that I completed it. A massive, massive thank you to everyone that has helped me, supported me, trained with me, sponsored me, donated gifts to the raffle for me, the list is endless. Thank you all so much. Through all of your help and efforts, between us and once the money has been collected from the raffle and the places that Les has put sponsorship forms, we have almost raised £1500. However, if you are reading this and haven’t yet donated, it’s not too late. This page will be open until August 2012, so please donate and help the worthy causes that Champneys have chosen to support this year. Thank you all very, very much xxx
Sun 20th May 2012 - The big day seemed to have come round very, very quickly. In actual fact, it was only six weeks ago that I first got very nervously back on to my bike, with a lot of encouragement from Les. I have to admit, I did feel a wee bit apprehensive on the journey to Champneys. None of my rides so far, had taken me up to the full 22 miles, so I was still concerned that I would make it all the way.
However, I got there and the place was buzzing with atmosphere and activity. I finally got to meet Jez, who definitely looked the part. Les and the team were all there in full force. We signed in and collected our visual safety tunic and water bottles and then made our way to the start line, ready for the off. I believe there were 287 riders – amazing. I was concerned it would be a bit of a bun fight to find some space on the roads but everyone set off at their own pace and spaced out nicely.
Reality hit home immediately as we started peddling and I realised we actually had to cycle 22 miles. However, having Jez for company was brilliant, as he offered lots of support, encouragement and tips and watching him ride, has given me more goals to aim for. Sounds silly but even the way he starts and stops is brilliant and seeing him do it gives me hope that at some point , I too will be able to do it, given a bit more practise and muscle build up! At the moment, my setting off is more like being on a scooter, with my good leg paddling away on the ground, until I get enough speed up to get it up on to the pedal and cycle.
We seemed to get to the first checkpoint fairly quickly, about an hour I think, and I could see the Greyhound Pub in Haynes looming at the top of the hill. I didn’t think there was any way that I would get there without walking the last bit but with Jez’s encouragement and tips, I actually made it to the top, without getting off! However, it wasn’t a pretty sight, me wheezing and gasping for air. I don’t think that Jez even broke into a sweat! Someone said that that was the worst hill – phew, thank heavens for that! We stopped there and had light refreshments and replenished our water bottles and the pub very kindly let us use their facilities – thank you.
Then we were on our way again. We passed through some of Bedfordshire’s most spectacular places and enjoyed the scenery and wildlife along the way. Jez thought that he heard parakeets in the woods! We had another long, slow hill to climb and sometimes they can be worse than short, steep hills but again with Jez’s encouragement and the adrenaline flowing from the buzz of the day, I made it up to the top again. I’m sure a lot of other people did too and to some, it may not have been too much effort but the people that have been cycling with me regularly in training, particularly Chris, know that I have struggled a bit with hills – partly due to lack of fitness and muscle mass.
We followed the Champneys signs and made it to the tea rooms at Southill. What a fabulous place for our lunch stop – well worth a visit. We went inside and had a hot cuppa and sat in the warmth for a while – very cosy and very welcome, and welcoming! Jez was a bit cold, as this route was quite minor league stuff for him – he is used to doing MTB marathon championships. However, he is still an amputee, like me, so good effort Jez.
We figured that we had about seven miles left to go and seeing as we had been asked not to get back before 2pm, we left the tea rooms at about 1.15pm. I knew that the route back was now quite flat, except for the sleeping policemen through Langford and Henlow and we cycled very sedately back to Champneys.
Yeeeaahhhh – we made it – all 22 miles. Not sure how long it took because of the stops but it wasn’t a race anyway. I was delighted to see that some friends had turned up to welcome us over the finish line – thanks guys. We received our certificates and headed to the marquee where refreshments and dinner was served. Speeches, photos and entertainment followed and a good time was had by all I think. The rain that had originally been forecast, stayed away and so once again, I dodged getting rained on! What a great day! Thanks to all at Champneys for hosting the event and looking after us all so well. And well done to everyone who took part in the event.
Next year – 36 miles and yes, I will endeavour to raise my seat higher before then. Lol!

Fri 18th May 2012 - I cycled 9.75 miles tonight, my penultimate ride, all on my little lonesome as nobody could come out to play tonight. However, I did the same route as before and knocked ten minutes off! Woo hoo. Jez, the cycling enthiusiast and fellow amputee that I spoke to for some advice, has very kindly offered to ride with me on the day for company. Thanks Jez.
Tue 15th May 2012 - Chris and Keith (thanks guys) cycled with me again tonight. I didn't feel very well and was going to turn back but they persuaded me to keep going. I also had problems with my leg again tonight and it was very sore and I suffered bad phantom pain. I had to stop for a while to let it ease up. Anyway, we managed 9.75 miles, although it took a while - 1 1/4 hours. I had diarrhoea when I got home - knew I wasn't feeling well :-( On a positive note, I spoke to another amputee, Jez, who is keen on cycling and he has come across all of the issues that I have encountered and has given me lots of useful information and some remedies to try. Thanks Jez :-) He has also told me, like Les, that I need to get my seat higher up. I will give it a try but I am not promising!
Mon 14th May 2012 - I received the t-shirt that I will be wearing for the ride. Longborough Graphics Ltd, Sandy, 01767-680658 very kindly printed it for me at Les's request. www.longboroughgraphics.co.uk Thank you Chris and all the team :-)
A big thank you to everyone that has either donated time, money, goods, services & prizes for this event. You are all amazing. Thank you very much!
Sun 13th May 2012 - The last weekend before the big day. Definitely becoming more of a reality now! Chris cycled with me again today (thanks Chris). We did 18.3 miles and where as last week we did 17.7 in 2 1/4 hours. This week we went further but in less time - 2 hours and five minutes! I am chuffed to bits about that. And the sun came out - marvellous! Les changed my gears for me yesterday and they are a definite improvement - thanks Les. I also noticed an improvement in my cycling today and was definitely not as whacked as last week. Last week I got home and had a snooze for an hour. Two more rides to go this week and then the biggie. Woo hoo.
Wed 9th May 2012 - Me crew came wiv me tonight. lol. That's enough of that talk! I had a posse tonight! I was joined by Chris, Keith and Steve. Thanks guys. They were only allowed to join on the proviso, that when I was puffing and panting and struggling up hills, they had to make it look like they were struggling too, even if they weren't! Chris doesn't play nicely and sometimes goes back down the hill and rides back up again, whilst I am still struggling up the once. ;-p We did 7.7 miles and managed to dodge the rain showers (yeaahhh) but not the wind (boooo). Steve had to do a shorter route, due to the fact that he was riding an old bike of mine and only one gear was working properly. Well done Steve!. My stump was a bit sore tonight. Don't know why but it can cut that out!
Sun 6th May 2012 - Les changed my gear shifter for me on Saturday, as I was having trouble changing gears. He reckons it was me being weak but he did agree that they were very hard to change. Hmmm! Chris and I cycled today and we managed 17.7 miles in 2 and 1/4 hours. Whoop. whoop!!! Am very pleased with that. Absolutely shattered now but chuffed to bits!!! Finally, the 22 miles seem slightly less daunting than they did last weekend! Well done to Chris (and thank you) for cycling with a bad head too, even tho' it was self-inflicted lol.
Wed 2nd May 2012 - Chris cycled with me tonight (thanks Chris :-)) and we managed 7.6 miles in just under an hour. So not bad! Couple of long and slow hills and one of them beat me but only because of the gears, unfortunately. My gears are still causing me a problem - not great when you are going up hill and they won't change, as you lose all momentum. So I will have to get Les to have another look for me. I will also have to get the pedal clip removed, as it is quite hard for me to get my foot in it once I start off and also, when I wanted to stop, I couldn't get my foot out and thought I was going to fall over, so it is gonna have to go!
Mon 30th April 2012 - I cycled round the living room tonight. 6 miles clocked up and I gave myself some hills too lol.
Les told me that Mrs Gorman's bike got sold at the weekend and the sale raised £60, which Mrs Gorman has very kindly donated to the charity. Thank you, once again Mrs Gorman.
Thanks to everyone, once again for your support.
Sat 28th April 2012 - I cycled to Biggleswade again, so 13.4 miles. My gears are jumping a bit and when they do it knocks my right foot off the pedal plus also, when it's wet, the foot slides off. So Les adjusted my gears and put the other toe clip on for me. Thanks Les :-) Nathan sorted out my bike computer for me too, as I had mucked it up. thanks Nathan. :-) I also picked up my new helmet - which is great! The cycle back was pretty awful as it was very, very wet and the wind was against me all the way. So a very tough ride home. I was going to go further but this was the first ride for a week, after having been ill and I just didn't have the energy. It's amazing how quickly you can lose fitness! Am undecided about the toe clip, as although it keeps my foot on the pedal, I still find it quite hard to get started and the toe clip gets in the way until I can find it and get going. Jury's still out.
Sun 22nd April 2012 - Les fitted my new basket to my bike. Woo hoo I love it. Thanks Les. Means I can carry more crap! Wasn't feeling so good but went for a ride with Sally and Chris. Chris reckons it was 15 miles but Sally and I both think it was longer! Unfortunately, I mucked up my bike computer, so couldn't check it. :-( Had to stop half way round, as I felt unwell. The whole trip took us 2.5 hours which shocked us all! Am gonna have a rest until next weekend to get over this bug. Thanks Sally and Chris.
Fri 20th April 2012 - Didn't fancy getting soaked to the skin tonight. So I went for a lap around the living room on my trusty static bike. The batteries had run out, so I'm not sure how many miles I clocked up but I was on for an hour and did a few hills and was tired afterwards, so I must have clocked up a few!
Mon 16th April 2012 - I rode on my own tonight. Not too much fun, as a couple of cars got very close to me :-( I did 5.5 miles.
Sat 14th April 2012 - OMG! I set myself the challenge of cycling to the bike shop and I did it! 13.4 miles and it took me just over 1.5 hours. There is one final hill just before home and it almost finished me off but I made it. I now have a severe case of jelly legs and considering that one of them is partly made of metal, that's quite an achievement! I feel absolutely shattered and I keep thinking that in five weeks time, I have to do twice the distance - oh dear! Les made some more modifications to my bike whilst I was at the shop. The heel on my false leg keeps wandering on to the arm of the pedal, so Terry of www.stotfoldengineers.co.uk/ has very kindly made a plate (for free) to fix to my pedal to stop this from happening. It works wonderfully. Just the job! A big thank you Terry! :-)
Another thank you I need to say is to Mrs Gorman of Sandy. She has decided her cycling days are over due to recent medical problems and gave Les her bike to sell. She has pledged the money from the sale of the bike to be used as a donation for this event. Les is hoping to get approx. £50 plus for the bike, so another very big thank you Mrs Gorman.
Whilst I'm here, I would like to say a very big thank you to everyone who has supported and sponsored me. You're all great! Thank you xx
Wed 11th April 2012 - Tonight I was due to do the same circular route as on Monday but with Les. Unfortunately, he had to cancel. Seeing as I felt pretty tired, I thought that I would give myself the night off. However, Chris turned up unexpectedly, so I did the 5.2 miles with him. Even managed a bit of chatting (in between the wheezing, puffing & panting) whilst going up the hills. Still beaten by the third hill though but getting better! Thanks Chris!
Mon 9th April 2012 - Went out with Sally and Chris again today (thanks guys) and we did a circular route of 5.2 miles. There were three nasty hills and I got up 2 of them but was thwarted half way up on the last one. Chris went up twice - show-off :-) and Sally got to the top too! They noticed straight away, that I seemed more stable today, so that bumpy path yesterday, did work wonders. Another milestone today - as it was all roads, some busy and some not so busy. Definitely getting better at setting off too! :-)
Sun 8th April 2012 - Six weeks to go! Time to start clocking up some miles, methinks. Les and Christine (thank you again) rode with me today and we did 5.5 miles. Les and Christine put a new saddle on for me today and it is pretty comfy - not quite like sitting in an armchair but pretty good. The ride today was all on the flat but there were some bumpy bits and I think that they have definitely helped with my balance, as towards the end, I was definitely feeling more confident and stable. The heel of my false leg keeps turning in and hitting the pedal crank shaft, so Les is going to get a bit welded on to my pedal to stop it. My good leg is really noticing the hard work that it is doing but the muscles in my other leg don't seem to be working at all, as I do not feel them. That leg is quite atrophied due to a nerve condition and the hospital originally said that I would never get the muscles back - guess they were right.
Fri 6th April 2012 - Yeaahhh. Sally and Chris (thank you) escorted me today and we only did 2.2 miles but it was all stabiliser free! Goodbye stabilisers :-)
Wed 4th April 2012 - Whoop whoop! Woo hoo! I did it. I rode without my stabilisers tonight! :-) I rode 2.2 miles again tonight and 1.1 of those miles was without stabilisers. The hardest part is figuring out how to get going. Sounds silly but I couldn't use my false leg to start as I could not get it back on the pedal once I was moving. And trying to use my real leg to balance and push off from is also an impossibility but a bit of head scratching and we got there! Thanks to Les again for helping.
Mon 2nd April 2012 - My first bike ride on my own - scary stuff! I clocked up 2.2 miles tonight - better than nowt. :-) Aching legs though :-( long slow hill to climb tonight but a good bit of free-wheeling on the way home :-)
Sun 1st April 2012 - Woo hoo. Les has fitted a computer to my bike, so that I know for sure that I rode 4.2 miles and it took me about an hour ish. My shoulder is aching boo hoo but my leg is ok today. Getting better :-) 7 Weeks to go - yikes!
Tue 27th March 2012 - Pretty pleased with myself. I did two miles today. Still not 22 miles and still not rid of the stabilisers but a definite improvement on Sunday :-) A big `thank you' to Les for taking time out to ride with me again.
Sun 25th March 2012 - Cycled for half an hour. Pretty tough going. My leg is quite sore, as it is a new pressure on it. Still haven't got my balance back. Still nervous of being so far off the ground. Can't see that my stabilisers will be off any time soon. :-(
I seem to have lost the earlier postings that I put up, so here is a quick recap of the story so far.... I wanted to be able to ride my bike again and I went to Les at Pedals and asked for his help. He has been making different mod's to my bike to enable me to start cycling again. He put on stabilisers for me, as balance seemed to be an issue. And to allow my artificial leg to be able to do a full revolution on the pedal, the seat has to be a lot higher. Therefore, I can only reach the ground on my good leg on tiptoes. My false leg, also has to be strapped on to the pedal too, otherwise it just flies off. All of this makes it a bit scary and confidence is a big issue too. At some point Les suggested I set myself the goal of taking part in this event and as it says on the page `it seemed like a good idea at the time!' So this diary has highlighted some of the issues and part of the journey.
