Update: I now have my official time - 2 hours 52 minutes 18 seconds. I came 62nd out of 128 starters for this distance.
The plan was to take part in the New Forest 10 (NF10) – a 10 mile run through the New Forest – in order to raise money for JDRF (Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation).
I have suffered with problems with both of my knees which prevented me from doing many training runs. I was not going to let this stop me but I attempted an easy jog yesterday and my right knee only lasted 8 minutes before becoming painful. As a result I have decided that it would be foolish to attempt a 10 mile run.
However, as I have received sponsorship I do need to do something so I have decided to do a bike ride instead. I have been doing some cycling as fitness training in preparation for the run so feel this is the best option.
I am entering a 25 mile off road route on 17th July. It is designed for riders that want to challenge themselves. The route is suitable for those with off-road
experience and a reasonable level of fitness and normally takes between 3
to 5 hours.
I don't intend to take anywhere near as long as 5 hours and my target would be to beat the 3 hours.
My official time was 2 hours 52 minutes 18 seconds. I came 62nd out of 128 starters in this distance.
About diabetes
About 350,000 people in the UK alone are affected by type 1 diabetes with over 25,000 of them children. It is a leading cause of kidney failure, adult blindness, stroke, heart attacks and nerve damage leading to amputation.
Type 1 Diabetes is an auto-immune disease where the bodies immune system
attacks and destroys the insulin producing beta cells of the pancreas.
It is not caused by lifestyle or being overweight.
On average the life expectancy of a person with type 1 diabetes is shortened by 15 years. However, each person’s experiences of living with type 1 diabetes are unique.
Diabetes is difficult to deal with and the potential consequences are extremely concerning, but research has already led to great improvements in treating diabetes and quality of life and future advances in technology and research will eventually result in diabetes being curable.
Until the cure is found, a person with type 1 diabetes must test their blood glucose levels and have insulin injections a number of times during the day.
