Story
This page has been created in memory of my sister, Wendy Capon, who died far too young in Spain on 7th April 2013 as a result of liver failure.
Wendy and I grew up with our younger sister Heather, and our wonderful mum and dad in Purley, Surrey. We went to Christchurch Primary School together where Wendy had many friends and have many happy memories of those days. Wendy went on to attend Taunton Manor secondary school before going to Carshalton college to study on a hotel receptionist course. We both worked weekends & holidays at the Aerodrome hotel, Purley Way, as chambermaids - and I also remember a work experience placement at the Sloane Club in London, where we once slept over after a night on the town!
However, Wendy got her first permanent job at Legal & General based in Kingswood, Surrey where our dad also worked most of his life. She stayed there until she left after her husband, Steve, died in 2007, completing around 25 years service. Again, I know she made many, many good friends through work, and she worked in several different departments/sections.
However, it was through her love of a certain football club, Crystal Palace FC, who our dad used to take us to watch on a regular basis as we were growing up, that she met Steve, who was to become her husband. They were both session ticket holders and Palace fanatics, following them home and often away. Steve soon moved in with Wendy in her house in Charlwood, and after staying in Steve's mum's apartment out in Spain several times, they decided to buy their own apartment overlooking Torrequebrada Golf Course - not that Wendy did anything as energetic as play golf when they were out there!
In 2004, Steve and Wendy got married in the Botanic Gardens in Gibraltar, with a beautiful reception back in Spain not far from their apartment. They were so happy to be joined on this wonderful occasion by many family and friends from the UK as well as Spain. Although they still had jobs & a home in England, they spent many long weekends and holidays at their apartment. Unfortunately, in December 2007, a few days after they had arrived in Spain for a Christmas/New Year break, Steve died suddenly of a heart attack at their apartment.
This obviously was a very difficult time for Wendy, Steve's family and their friends, and when Wendy found out about a restructure at work she took the opportunity to request voluntary redundancy, and take some 'time out', which she spent in Spain. Over recent years she has had the time to use her creative/artistic side, for example, developing her 'Wedding Wows' business. She also developed a new relationship with boyfriend Kevin, who has been very supportive as her own health has deteriorated over the last 18months -2 years. She found out that she had developed a form of hepatitis, and although this seemed under control through medication, and she managed to quit both drinking and smoking before Christmas, she spent a month in hospital just after Christmas as her legs and feet in particular were very swollen and she struggled to walk. Things seemed to be improving and she was looking forward to the summer and 'flip flop' weather. Then just before Easter she struggled to get out of bed, and developed a problem with her kidneys. She was taken back into hospital where the doctors said an infection had caused septic shock which was causing problems with her organs, including her kidneys and lungs. Her stomach, legs, hands, feet and face were several badly swollen due to liver cirrhosis. By Easter Monday, she was fully sedated and on a ventilator, and given a 10% chance of survival over the next 2-3 days. A fighter to the end, she died peacefully and painlessly six days later on Sunday 7th April at 2pm with her mum, both her sisters and Kevin by her side.
We will never forget her and never stop loving her - RIP Wendy xxx
Wendy was a clever, intelligent , beautiful person. She made choices in life as we all do, and she really wanted to turn her life around - she had seen first hand the pain that death causes to those that are a close to a person, and I know that she wouldn't have made a choice to inflict that on any of us. Unfortunately it was too late for her, but your donation in her memory could help someone else before it is too late for them, through awareness raising and support of organisations such as the British Liver Trust. Please, please, please also if you haven't done already, consider joing the organ donation register.
