Virgin London Marathon 2010 · 25 April 2010 ·

We are a Colchester based charity which provides specialist palliative and end of life care to local people facing incurable illness in north east Essex, supporting them, their families, friends and carers.

Story

Crazy as it may seem I am attempting to run the London Marathon on Sunday 25th April 2010.Training is going well although a small injury has put the brakes on a bit. I have however been assured by the Physio that I can do it, as built up enough miles - I hope he is right. Marathon fever setting in now and all the team really seem to be looking forward to it. I can't wait - 4 weeks and counting!!!!

Helping drive me to reach that goal is knowing that I am running to raise money for St Helena Hospice a great charity.  St Helena Hospice provides specialist palliative care services, with no charge to patients and their families, for people living in North Essex who have progressive, life threatening illness. The emphasis is about quality of life and services include community and day services, the in-patient unit, Macmillan nurses, medical services, family support, art therapy, spiritual support, physiotherapy and occupational therapy as well as complementary therapies such as acupuncture.

My friend's husband who is being supported by the hospice has written this poem which I think shows why St Helena Hospice is so important. Please help me to raise  as much money as I possibly can.

I think that it says it all x

The Hallways soaked in tears and pain

Of enldess loved ones with hearts blackened with grief

The nurses whisper outside the rooms

You dare not to listen for fear of your name

The scent of flowers lingers in the air

And beeps and buzzers for those that need care

Your pillow they plumped your face they will clean

Your pills they will bring you

Your tea and morphine

You sleep in safe hands they are always on call

With sick bowl in hand and time for you all

You will want for nothing never open your purses

We give thanks and a prayer to the hard working nurses.
