WHO ARE THE WET-FOOT-ERS?
‘Wet Foot’ is the cross-cultural ministry of
All Souls Church. Our Wet Foot team to India is partnering M.A.T (Mahalir Aran Trust) this year and we are a motley
crew of 20 members from diverse backgrounds of which some have expertise in
I.T., language and biblical teaching, health & counseling, fashion design
& merchandising, business & marketing, as well veterinary science –
which we hope could contribute to M.A.T.’s work.
WHO IS M.A.T.?
‘Mahalir Aran’ is ‘a place of protection for women’ in Tamil. Based in Dharmapuri, the Mahalir Aran Trust was founded 16 years ago as a local Christian organisation that provides refuge for disadvantaged women and children. In addition to providing accommodation and counselling, a small social enterprise called ‘Flowering Desert’ has been established in partnership with VIA Design to enable the women to produce and market handicrafts and textiles with a view toward capability development, financial independence and empowerment.
Today, M.A.T. serves to meet the practical, emotional and spiritual needs of a community of over 400 families in surrounding villages as it has grown to include a school, a farm, an orphanage, and a plan for a medical clinic.
WHAT WILL WE BE DOING?
Teaching English, the Bible, and computer skills | Suggesting new creative ideas for fabric or jewelery products and assisting in their production | Advising on marketing ideas for various products | Running games and activities for children | Assisting with M.A.T.’s administrative work | Advising on health issues, attending to medical needs and providing counselling services | Assisting in farming efforts and repair needs.
