My story

In October 2011 Will Adams and Nicola Adams (Mother and Son) spent four weeks volunteering in Malawi.

We were involved in a number of schemes whilst out in Malawi. Nicola (Mumsy) worked in the local clinics and hospital running ante-natal clinics, providing support and education to those affected by HIV/AIDS and even delivered a couple of healthy new babies!  Nicola also helped run an after school health club with the other medical volunteers educating about general first aid, CPR and HIV and AIDS awareness.

Will spent a large part of his time teaching secondary school maths along with private tutorials, running an after school maths club and assisting with testing of the Ripple Rocket, the charities new fuel efficient cookstove, for the carbon credit offset scheme.

We both helped at the under-5's clinics weighing babies to check for malnutrition, immunising against diseases and helped administer medication against lymphatic filariasis.

One boy in the local community had an infected knee from the lymphatic filariasis. His family could not afford to pay for transport or medication. We used the money you donated to take him to hospital, pay for the food, medication and treatment he needed. This saved his leg from amputation and potentially the boys life.

We can not express enough how grateful we are for your support and the effect it has had. We have prepared a short video to show you how your donations have helped attached to this webpage.

About Ripple Africa

Ripple Africa is a UK Registered Charity No. 1103256 established in 2003 by Geoff and Liz Furber. The charity is a small enterprise with a high focus on any funds raised going to the projects in Malawi. Its key aims are to improve the standard of educations and healthcare, preserve and develop the environment in a sustainable way and to create opportunities for the local community to help themselves. The Charity Projects

Education - Mwaya has 850 students and only 6 teachers. Ripple Africa is supporting 6 local nursery schools and 4 local primary schools in providing building materials, supplies, desks and funds Malawian trainee teachers. Ripple also currently sponsors 40 students through secondary school and started building a secondary school in Kapanda in 2007 though desperately needs funding to complete the project.

Healthcare - Kachere health centre has 18,000 patients and only 2 nurses/midwives. Ripple provides much needed support to local healthcare facilities through public health and awareness campaigns, providing education on HIV/AIDS, renovating health centre and building a clinic for under 5's. Donations will help fund a new community clinic as well as providing bicycle ambulances and support healthcare initiatives.

Conservation Projects - 30% of forests have disappeared in the last 10 years. Ripple has set up over 175 local nurseries and has to date helped plant 3 million trees. The charity has helped secure the passing of local bylaws protecting the forest along with educating the community on fruit growing and the use of fuel efficient stoves.

Micro-finance projects - Ripple Africa aim to give a hand up and not a hand out. To do this they need to help promote sustainable, viable business in the local communities. Micro-finance projects provide loans to small initiatives such as bee keeping, fish farming and fruit growing. These loans help get business off the ground and put a focus on independence and future growth rather than short term aid.
