I have been dragged out of running retirement to do the Great North Run this year for the National Rheumatoid Arthritis Society. 

NRAS was launched in 2001 by a group of Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) patients (including its present chief executive, Ailsa Bosworth), who saw a need to provide some focus and a voice for people with this misunderstood disease. "Arthritis" covers over 200 conditions.  Nearly half a million people suffer from RA with is the most common of the inflammatory arthritides and it should not be confused with osteoarthritis.  It is a painful, disabling autoimmune disease and has no known cause or cure.
