Story

Hi,

Thanks for visiting William's page to raise funds for a cooling unit at St Mary's and Queen Charlotte hospital.

Money is being raised by a number of lovely people in many ways – 10K runs, coffee mornings, charity parties, sponsored swims, quiz nights and many more!  By supporting these events and donating on this site you will enable the Winnicott Foundation to buy a much-needed piece of equipment.

Please read below the story that inspired us all to support the work of this charity.

William was born on 14 July this year but, on delivery, he was sadly not breathing and was without a pulse.  He was transferred to the Winnicott paediatric intensive care unit at St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington and put on a special cooling bed to lower his core temperature.   This was a very distressing time but William was a little fighter – he responded well to the treatment and, bit by bit, the medical support was removed.  While it will take a number of years to find out if William has any long term effects because of his difficult start in life, he is currently developing  exactly how a newborn should, which bodes well for the future.  We are very aware that this is due to the fantastic medical care he received at St Mary’s and, in particular, the specialist cooling therapy.  There are only a limited number of these cooling beds available in the UK and, to be effective, treatment has to start within 6 hours.  More cooling beds are being bought for hospitals, and specialist ambulances used to transport babies are being fitted with them, but they are still very limited and not all babies get access to this equipment.  Knowing this, we decided that we would like to raise £14,015 to pay for another cooling bed for the Winnicott units at St Mary’s and Queen Charlotte hospital as there is a clear need, but not the funds, within the NHS. Thank you so much for helping us to raise this money so that future babies can benefit from the same treatment that William received.
