Story

Some of you know Sean and I - we have been together 3 years now, but although the plan was initially to go eventing, after some setbacks, falls and non-existent confidence, we have very neatly side-tracked into pootling about and doing a bit of dressage (dancing horses, for those not familiar with the term - but we are not as good as those you see at the Olympics ;) )

A few of you might have heard of the Hannah Willberry Pony Charity. Hannah Francis was an 18-year old event rider who was diagnosed with osteosarcoma. During that period, she wrote a blog from the point of view of Willberry, her cuddly toy and set up a charity known as Willberry Wonder Pony. You might even have seen Willberry travelling around some the cross-country courses at some big events like Badminton and the Rio Olympics this year, hitching a lift with the riders!  On 1st August this year, Hannah passed away but there are others who have taken on the challenge of continuing the work she started.  Although this is a different form of cancer, many of you know I lost my grandma and grandpa in 2015 and both had cancer.

The Wobbleberry Challenge is for "middle-aged, wimpy riders" (those of us who don't bounce and should know better) to complete a BE(80) in 2017. For those not familiar with Eventing, this is a competition that is the equestrian equivalent of triathlon, completing a dressage test, showjumping and cross country courses all in one day. The 80 refers to the jump height of 80cm (2'9). This didn't used to sound quite so awful, but since completely losing my confidence jumping, a few injuries and a prolonged illness this year, it now sounds pretty difficult..

Still, that's what makes it a challenge, right?! So there are lots of us all over the country, who have agreed to be completely mad and spend the next year learning how to manage this feat and all being equal, complete a competition next year. The money raised is going into research into bone cancer, and giving terminally ill patients the opportunity to achieve their wishes.
