Yes we may be mad but we have signed up to face our fears of flying, camping, sand, scorpions, snakes and lack of washing facilities.... to trek over 100 kilometres across the Sahara Desert over 6 gruelling days all in aid of Wood Green the Animals Charity.
Any why? Each year Wood Green finds secure, loving homes for over 5,000 animals in need. Animals like the beautiful Puddle pictured here, abandoned onto the streets at less than 3 months old to fend for herself.
Founded over 80 years ago, Wood Green has a vision of a world where all pets are well cared for in loving homes for life. We both work for Wood Green and see new animals in need arriving into our care every day; dogs, cats, rabbits, chickens, goats, ponies, ferrets and even mice.
To support the care of these animals plus also to support the charity's vital education work we aim to raise over £5,000 through facing our fears and trekking across the sahara desert next spring.
Anna's story:
As the Education Manager at Wood Green I am passionate about teaching young people responsible pet ownership through our Hands On programme of activities. I've seen first hand the direct impact education can have, whether it's a rabbit getting a friend to live with for companionship, a cat being neutered and micro chipped or a family dog being trained through positive reward based training.
We know that through Hands On we are making a difference but there are so many more pets we can help and so many more young people we could work with. We know there are thousands of lonely rabbits housed in tiny hutches up and down the UK living sad and lonely lives. We know there are also many thousands of kittens born every year unwanted and abandoned. Plus we know there are thousands of dogs living up and down our streets not getting a daily walk or even a good meal to go to sleep on. YOUR donation will help Wood Green and Hands On reach even more pets in need and also make the pets of tomorrow happier and healthier.
Sam's story
I have now worked in the cat section at Wood Green for 3 years. In this time I have unfortunately seen some very sad cases of neglect and disease. I first hand see what can happen when an animal isn't cared for properly. In recent months we have seen many cats falling ill due to not being vaccinated. Just a simple injection could help save the lives of many cats. Thankfully with some treatment and love many of the animals do pull through the tough times. This is just one of the things your donations help with.
We have also seen a rise in kittens in the last few years. Simply neutering a cat can stop this and also help stop the spread of diseases.
Unfortunately we are seeing many cats coming to our shelter for many different reasons. This includes financial problems, unwanted litters of kittens and stray cats. We currently have a waiting list of cats who need our help. When the cats come in to us we do our very best to make their stay is as comfortable as possible. This means making their accommodation as homely as we can and spending time with them so they don't become lonely and depressed. Many of the cats are frightened when they come in. It takes time to bring them round and for them to gain trust in us.
Its not all doom and gloom though. The job I have is very rewarding when I see the cats in our care find new loving homes. Seeing a cat come through the worst and find a new home is a wonderful feeling and definitely makes the job a lot easier. Getting to care for an animal and know you are making the tough time in their life a little bit easier by being able to care for them and play with them is very satisfying.
Your donations go a long way and we need these donations to keep coming in! Your generosity enables us to care for the animals and keep them until they find their forever home.
Puddle's story
Abandoned onto Cambridge city streets at less than twelve weeks old, Puddle was named as she was found lying alone and frightened in a muddy street puddle. Brought to Wood Green she is just one of five dogs arriving at our Cambridgeshire centre every single day. This beautiful Rottweiler pup is currently staying in a foster home until she is ready to find a forever home. Caring for just one dog like Puddle and finding her a new home costs Wood Green over £600 so reaching our £5,000 target could help so many more dogs in need just like Puddle.
