The Ride for Rabies Team
WORLD RABIES DAY 2011
In August, a team of vets, scientists and epidemiologists will attempt the challenge of cycling between OIE reference laboratories starting at the Institut Pasteur, Paris, France and cycling back to the Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency, Weybridge, UK to raise awareness for WORLD RABIES DAY
RABIES continues to kill more than 55,000 people per year across the globe. Affecting mostly children and the impoverished, infection with rabies virus is invariably fatal once clinical disease is observed and is one of the most feared viruses on the planet.
In the 3 days it will take the team to cycle the 200 mile route, GLOBALLY more than 400 people will die from rabies- most of which will be children
under THE age OF 15
AWARENESS of this devastating disease and the simple preventative measures that can be taken are key to saving lives. VACCINATION of animals and EDUCATION of populations living in areas where the virus exists can dramatically alter the effect of the virus on the human population. Through the GLOBAL ALLIANCE FOR RABIES CONTROL and WORLD RABIES DAY, both educational material and provisions of vaccines are developed to RAISE AWARENESS where the virus is present and threatens human populations.
RABIES IS 100% PREVENTABLE- PLEASE GIVE GENEROUSLY TO HELP SAVE THE LIVES OF THOSE IN NEED
