World Book Night represents the most ambitious and far-reaching celebration of adult books and reading ever attempted in the UK and Ireland. On Saturday, 5 March 2011, two days after World Book Day, one million books will be given away by an army of passionate readers to members of the public across the UK including myself. I have been chosen as one of the UK's 20,000 ‘givers’, who will each distribute 48 copies of their chosen title to whomever they choose on World Book Night.

I have selected 'Stuart - a life backwards'. In my early 20s I walked out of a train station and was soon approached by a beggar. I told him I was in a rush to get to a job interview and he asked me where I was going. Needless to say he escorted me to the venue straightaway and not once did he expect any form of payment - he just wanted someone to talk to.

My request is humble and sincere - I would like to be sponsored a small amount for each book I give out - for example 10p will be £4.80 in total.

So please, embrace the simple fact we all have been taught to read and write. Celebrate literacy in giving a little bit of money to help Wintercomfort get homeless people back on the right path.

'Stuart' is a biographical tale of a homeless man living on the streets of Cambridge. He joins the author in campaigning for the release of two Wintercomfort directors falsely imprisoned for 'allowing' drug taking on their premises despite having no part in the events. I have asked some chaps from Wintercomfort to accompany me around the streets of Cambridge in handing out 48 books free of charge to University students, tourists and revellers.
