Story

Yellow-shouldered Amazon struggles against human encroachment

With an estimated wild population in the low thousands the Yellow-shouldered Amazon (Amazona barbadensis) is vulnerable due to habitat loss, drought, predation and intense poaching.

Dr. Sam Williams, who the World Parrot Trust has supported since 2005 with his and Rowan Martin's research and conservation work for the Yellow-shouldered Amazon, launched the Echo project. The Echo project aims to:

- rescue, rehabilitate and release parrots caught in the bird trade
- protect and restore vital habitat for nesting and foraging
- create an education campaign
- manage nesting sites
- continue research into breeding ecology
- introduce sustainable tourism
