Wow! I can’t believe it I would love to!
Who would have thought a band 5 Radiographer from Torbay would be going to Africa to help treat children!
So, on this page I need to write a bit about myself, why I’m raising money and why it means I really need your help!! So here it goes....
I am a young NHS worker (Radiographer) who works full time, contributes to the out of hours rota, and I am planning on using my only annual leave to make a difference.
I have never done anything like this before. But every now and then something so small that we take for granted here, can change a life somewhere else. So this November, I am flying out to Mombasa in Kenya for 10 days to help operate on children, adults and the elderly, fixing their bones.
I will be the only Radiographer as part of a team of NHS professionals including Surgeons, Anaesthetists and Scrub Nurses heading out to Kenya to provide a trauma service to the local community. We will be working 12-15 hour days to do as many operations as we can!
I will embark on this great cause with the Kenyan Orthopaedic Project (KOP) Charity, whose aim is to provide comprehensive Orthopaedic and trauma care to patients in Kenya. I will have to self-fund (via fundraising) the cost of flights, accommodation and any equipment, as all of the money donated by the sponsors of the project will go directly towards operating equipment and the cost of patient care. We have also had to take the time for the trip out of our annual leave so it will not affect the NHS service. Please help support and sponsor me as I attempt to raise the required £800!
A broken bone here in Britain is a simple injury that can be treated, but in Mombasa, it may never be treated due to lack of funds, supplies and knowledge. Orthopaedic surgery is expensive surgery, and with the average wage being just over a pound a day, many patients with traumatic injuries just cannot afford the necessary treatment. Many people in Mombasa are left with permanent pain, physical deformities and no use of the affected limbs, often no longer able to provide for their families.
Have a look at the charity KOP website: http://www.egho.co.uk/KOP.html
to see what it is all about. Read the stories and look at the photos. They say much more than I could...
Thank you for looking at my page and I hope you feel able to sponsor me.
Come on! Be part of my support team with time or money OR BOTH!
Thank You
Zoe Lennard
