On the 6 of April 2011, our team of 12 set off to walk 86 miles from the Abbeyfield House in St Leonard’s to Abbeyfield’s Headquarters in St Albans where we arrived on the 14 of April. The average age of our walkers was 73 and on some legs of our journey walkers were much older.
Our sponsored walk was to raise money for a new minibus for the seven residents of the St Leonard’s Abbeyfield house. Your support is vital to our success and will be very much appreciated.
Abbeyfield is a different independent way of living for older people. Sitting round a table, sharing food, and being more a family rather than an institution makes us different from everyone else. Ensuring there is lots of love all the time, a squeeze of the hand and the occasional hug when appropriate, and always a listening ear – that’s our Abbeyfield way! Abbeyfield has had a presence in St Leonards for over 40 years providing a supportive environment for frail older people over the years. Currently there are seven residents and Abbeyfield helps them to live a happy and independent life in the community - no matter how old they are.
We are raising money to provide trips for our residents and have just bought a replacement minibus which is a life line for residents providing outings, shopping trips, transport to doctor’s appointments and hospital appointments as well as pleasure drives and visits to the Christmas lights. Some of the residents have no family nearby and trips to local beauty spots are always popular and give residents something to look forward to.
