In February 2005 an incredible man called Kevin Allen saw the terrible plight of aids orphans in South
Africa on a TV documentary, and quite literally went Bananas.
He watched in horror as a young boy witnessed his father die
of AIDS in front his of eyes. He had to walk miles back to his home, a
filthy mud hut with no running water, gas or electricity. Distraught
and starving, he soon broke down in tears - so did Kevin. His mother had
already died of AIDS and his brave sister, aged only 11, tried to
comfort him in vain.
The programme continued, and so did the scenes of inhumanity. Thousands
of kids had lost their parents to AIDS and were left frightened and
alone, in poverty and starving.
Kevin asked himself why the world allowed this to happen - and a voice in his head said back - Why do you?
He knew from that instant he would not and six days later Kevin was standing in rural Nkandla, Zululand.
On 13th June 2005, Kevin started feeding 886 orphans and impoverished children
with fruit in schools in Zululand, at that time he had no real idea how to help the children and had no
money, so used the proceeds from the sale of his home, and then took on
an additional part-time job for nearly 18-months, simply to keep feeding
the children.
Since 2007 Kevin has fed over 700,000 meals to hungry children, who otherwise would have received no help and has founded the charity Banana Appeal.
Kevin asked himself why he should he let this happen, now it's time to ask yourself the same question.
On one of his many trips to Zululand Kevin came across two young children living in a mud hut which is in danger of collapsing, with no door for security and on someone elses land (trespassing). These children desperately need us to raise £1500 to enable them to build their own property on their own land which was left to them by their deceased parents.
